Here is one good reason to be able to identify poison ivy and distinguish it from other 3-leaf plants:

This is a wild strawberry, which is edible and delicious. And the leaves are “leaves of three”. 

But see the very distinct serrated edges of the leaves? Poison ivy leaves can have notches, but never these neat, even edges.
